 Mauritius was named after the Dutch Prince Maurice Van Nassau. Mauritius, an island covering 1,860 square kilometers (720 square miles), is situated some 2,000 kilometers (1242 miles) off the south East coast of Africa. More than 150 kilometers (93 miles) of white sandy beaches and transparent lagoon are protected from the open sea by the world’s third largest coral reef, which surrounds the island. The population is estimated at 1,2 million. It forms a mosaic of different races, cultures and religions since Mauritians are descendants of immigrants from the Indian sub-continent, Africa, Europe and China. The cultural diversity and racial harmony of the island make of Mauritius a unique place.

The best time to visit is between the cooler months of July and December when the temperatures are mild, rainfall is minimal and humidity is bearable. However, if you’re here for the diving, the best time is between December and March.

Port Louis

Triolet Shivala, the biggest Hindu temple of the islands was built in Triolet in 1819. The temple is dedicated to the Gods Shiva, Krishna, Vishnu, Muruga, Brahma and Ganesha. This place is also the longest village on the island. Other noted pilgrimage sites include the Pere Laval shrine and Lake Bassin.
